Irrigation: What You Need to Know

In this blog we will discuss irrigation. Why do I need irrigation? What is the purpose of irrigation? What types of irrigation should I consider? We are going to talk about all of this and more.

Irrigation is not just to keep your lawn lush and green, it goes beyond your turf to your plants, soil, and more. Keep reading to find out how irrigation should be a part of your landscape design and is part of creating your back yard oasis.

Have you ever heard the saying, "the grass is greener on the other side?" The truth is, the grass is greener where it's watered.

Let's look at some of the ways irrigation is a necessary part of any landscape design in Zone 8B.

Irrigation Needs for Zone 8B

In South GA, we are in zone 8b. This zone typically has mild winters and extremely hot summers. We get adequate rainfall most years, but with the extreme heat here, irrigation is a necessity. We typically install a system with timers that can be programmed to run on a schedule to make sure your turf and plants always have enough water. These systems can be adjusted to adhere to restrictions on watering times/days, off-season where irrigation isn't needed as much, etc.

A properly installed irrigation system will ensure coverage of all turf and plants. In some cases a drip irrigation system will be added to flower beds, but that is not always necessary.

Benefits of Having an Irrigation System

Saves money and resources:

Most people use an excess amount of water when trying to keep their lawn green and their landscaping vibrant. Not only is this wasteful, but it costs more on your water bill, or taxes your well more than necessary.

Keeps your turf and plants healthy:

Healthy turf and plants are more disease, fungus, and bug resistant. This saves time and money because healthy turf and plants don't need to be replaced.

Saves time and hassle

Without an irrigation system, most people spend their time dragging a hose around their yard watering their grass and plants. An irrigation system will automatically run at pre-scheduled times, and disperse the correct amount of water to all of your plants and turf. An irrigation system takes out the question of how frequently you should water, and how much you should water your turf and plants, and since it runs automatically, frees up your time allowing you to spend more time enjoying your outdoor living space.

How Do I Have an Irrigation System Installed?

If you're considering having an irrigation system installed we will make an appointment to come to your property and assess your individual needs for your turf and plants. We provide this consultation at no charge.

In some cases we will suggest taking a soil sample and having it tested. This will tell us if your turf has disease, fungus, or insects that are causing issues. If this is the case we can also discuss any soil amendments or treatments that might be needed to ensure healthy turf and plants. These treatments are relatively quick and cost effective.
